Valve seat inserts are used in the valve train area of internal combustion engines. The demands on valve seat inserts are not only for good heat and wear resistance but also for good machinability. This report therefore introduces a new valve seat insert material, which has superior machinability and which fulfils the demands just mentioned. The sintered materials used in this report are made of a mixture of manganese containing iron powder and certain types of sulfide powder, and have superior machinability due to precipitation of the fine MnS particles in the matrix. In the case of the molybdenum disulfide powder, the sulfur bonds with the manganese of the iron powder. This machinability improvement technique was developed and the new technology is now being applied as a good machinability material for intake valve seat inserts in gasoline engines.
