Combustion Driven Compaction (CDC) converts chemical energy directly to kinetic energy for compacting powders. A chamber is filled with a combustible gas mixture, which is then ignited producing rapid pressurization. A piston (ram) driven down by this rapid pressurization, compresses the powder in the die. A CDC press is an inherently simple device with a single moving part, the ram. Due to its simplicity and efficiency, a CDC press is also relatively small. The CDC process can be tailored to deliver modest to enormous compaction forces producing standard to near full density compacts. This paper will describe a three-year development effort to perfect the CDC process. Information includes; CDC process and history, design and operation of a CDC press, compaction results with various materials at standard and extreme loads, and projected use of CDC technology in research and high rate production.
