The automatic transmission is discovering new potential every day. The emergence of reliable' electronic control has unleashed a series of new concepts, which offer reduced fuel consumption along with equal or improved comfort and improved performance. The two basic gear layouts (layshaft and planetary) are no longer dependent on classical components for actuation. This paper examines several transmission systems and the latest developments in components to support them.
