A major challenge in distributed groupware is enabling efficient collaboration by assuring effective communication between the users. Different tools and widgets are commonly used to provide a sense of awareness of other users actions. The problem is compounded when collaboration takes place in a heterogeneous environment, with representation and semantics adapted to computing device's capabilities. We present an architecture that provides awareness under different types of heterogeneity, such as differences in data semantics and disparities in device capabilities. We introduce a consistency model for data sharing in heterogeneous systems and apply it to shared awareness information. An example of implementation of awareness tools in 3D and 2D environments is also provided. We show that the impact of using these tools in terms of network cost can be reduced by use of our architecture.
