This paper presents a case study led by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) of Dayton, OH to establish the benefits of employing collaborative engineering and Telematics technologies to the testing and development of advanced vehicles. SAIC instrumented a fleet of advanced vehicles to collect vehicle powertrain functionality data using real-time wireless data acquisition. The data was transmitted to and hosted on SAIC's wireless data center, located in Dayton, OH. All collected data was readily accessible over a secure link between SAIC, the vehicle test engineers, and key vehicle component suppliers. SAIC's wireless data acquisition system provides the vehicle engineers with insight of how the test vehicles were driven, their location, and the effects of altitude and terrain conditions on performance and durability. The engineers are able to view and analyze vehicle performance in real-time from their personal desktop computers in North America and Asia while the vehicles were being tested throughout the United States. Additionally, vehicle development engineers are able to download and analyze historical data to verify system and subsystem performance. As an added benefit, the vehicle test manager had the ability to simultaneously manage multiple tests and reconfigure vehicle instrumentation, thus improving test efficiencies, maximizing usable, high-quality data, reducing manpower costs and compressing test schedules.
