We have developed a new rf coupler device which is capable of working in dense medium such as a waterrnbased liquid. This device consists of a pair of co-axial cage shaped electrodes which allows for open access tornthe flow of water and also assures a rf power match for achieving high power operation. The preliminaryrnexperimental test results indicate the capability to deliver 2.2 kW of rf power at 13.56 MHz into 1.5 cubic-inchrnof water. More than 70% of the power from the power supply was coupled into the liquid medium and only 30rnper cent reflected. This new technology has great potential for the destruction of environmental contaminants inrnwater. This study investigates its application for the degradation of the widespread contaminants methyl tertbutylrnether (MTBE) and tert-butyl alcohol (TBA), which are introduced groundwater as a result of leakingrnunderground fuel storage tanks. The quantitative reduction of concentrations both MTBE and TBA willrnreported by means of purge and trap-gas chromatography measurements before and after rf treatment of therncontaminated water.
