As a renewable energy resource, alcohol fuel has a lot of advantages in China. However, it is difficult to fuel with alcohol in Diesel engines due to its low cetane number and high latent heat of vaporization. To solve its ignition problem, this paper proposes an approach combined internal exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) with injection of little diesel fuel. Based on this approach, a two-stroke single-cylinder Diesel engine is developed. Preliminary studies demonstrate that this engine can fuel with alcohol with almost zero level of particulate matter (PM) and low exhaust gas temperature. This alcohol-fuelled engine has lower NO_x emissions and 2~3% higher effective thermal efficiency than the engine operated with diesel fuel in moderate and high load zones.
