3D Simulation of Layer Mixing in a Three-Layer Stratified Forming Headbox

We used a commercially available software called FLUENT to simulate and visualize turbulence in a three-layeredrnstratified headbox of a paper machine in a three dimensional space. The three dimensional information, in terms ofrncolorful contours of velocity profiles, turbulent kinetic energy, and energy dissipation rates, is used to optimize thernvane thickness, nozzle angle, and vane length. The results show that it is possible to reduce the vane thickness torndecrease the turbulence intensity at the area of layer mixing and to increase the angle of the nozzle to compensaternfor the turbulence intensity reduction, either by increasing the turbulence area or the area of layer mixing. In otherrnwords, we may control the turbulence intensity and layer mixing areas by adjusting the vane thickness and nozzlernangle.
