Many large Cities in the United States are well into or nearing the completion of their smallrndiameter rehabilitation programs. Focus has now shifted to the more daunting problem ofrnpreserving or refurbishing sewer system major arteries, which carry all collected water to therntreatment plant for processing.rnEngineers and designers conscious of the environmental, social and economicalrnconsequence of large diameter open cut pipe replacement are looking for minimally invasiverntechnologies in construction, without compromising on high structural strength or loss ofrncross sectional area.rnThis paper will discuss the latest development in a family of machine spiral wound pipernrehabilitation techniques, which combines thermoplastic materials such as PVC and HDPErnwith high strength steel to produce ultra-stiff, intimate liners which are typically installedrnthrough pre-existing access structures.rnPresented will be detail of the technical design for machinery and liner materials, testingrnregime and appropriate standards as well as case study projects completed to date.rnThe reader will gain an appreciation of how this technology can be applied to projects underrnconsideration by detailing design criteria, site logistic, social and environmentalrnconsiderations which may add considerable value to constituents being served by fundedrnpipe rehabilitation projects.
