Ensuring the desired end result of a close-fit trenchless solution to buried pipeline rehabilitation requires arngood understanding of the applicable materials and their attendant installation methodologies. PVC,rnHDPE, and thermoset resins each have their own limits of performance and site-specific installationrnrequirements. In two previous papers, Embracing Changes in Trenchless Renewal Technology and QA/QCrnfor Close-Fit Trenchless Pipeline Renewal, the case was made that the most logical approach to plans andrnspecifications for projects involving trenchless pipeline renewal technologies was performance documents.rnPerformance documents convey the information necessary to prepare an accurate estimate of the cost of therndesired improvements and an understanding of what the level of performance for these improvementsrnshould be to meet the end user's (Owner's) objectives in making said improvements to his/her pipingrnsystem. Further, these documents set forth how the engineer on behalf of the Owner will approachrnmonitoring the installation of these improvements to confirm this level of performance has been obtained.rnThis paper will serve as a guide to the design engineer in the fundamentals of the various close-fit linerrntechnologies currently available and offer practical expertise into how to design, prepare the bidrndocuments, oversee the construction phase, and interpret the finished installation's QA/QC.
