The City of New York is presently in the design phase for the Catskill and Delaware UVrnDisinfection Facility, in collaboration with the Joint Venture of Hazen and Sawyer andrnCDM (JV). At approximately 2-bgd (7,600 ML/day), this will be the world's largest UVrndisinfection facility for drinking water. Validation testing is presently in preparation andrnwill be conducted in early 2005 by HydroQual, Inc. (HQI) with oversight by the JV andrnthe New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Low pressure, highrnoutput UV units capable of treating up to 40-mgd (150 ML/day) at a UVT of 87% are thernbasis of design for the Catskill/Delaware UV Disinfection Facility. UV units will bernprocured from several UV system suppliers (UVSS) to be validated and tested.rnValidation testing will be primarily based upon the USEPA's Draft UV DisinfectionrnGuidance Manual (June 2003) for specific log-inactivation targets, and will includernelements oriented to optimization of energy efficiency, as well as fully characterize thernperformance of the unit under various operating conditions. The evaluation of the UVrnunits' performance, based on the actual operating characteristics observed during therntesting, will include a life cycle cost evaluation.
