The importance of pathway as means of integrating biological knowledge into a coherent system has been increasingly recognized by the community of biologists. Due to research on formal frameworks and ontologies for pathway representation such as SBML, BioPath, etc., pathways have become not only graphical means of representing biological systems but also structured data bases of storing biological knowledge which should be continuously maintained to keep abreast with new relevant discoveries. However, the rapidly growing number of literature in the field makes it extremely difficult to identify relevant new discoveries which lead to revisions of portions in pathways.Furthermore, starting from graphical depiction of a rather small biological system, some of current pathways, which are used as organized knowledge base, have become a huge collection of nodes and links. It has become increasingly difficult, if not impossible, to associate discoveries in literature with relevant portions in such a large pathway.
