System-theoretic modeling and simulation frameworks suchrnas Object-Oriented Discrete-event System Specificationrn(OO-DEVS) are commonly used for simulating complexrnsystems, but they do not account for domain knowledge. Inrncontrast, Model-Driven Design environments like Rhapsodyrnsupport capturing domain-specific software design, but offerrnlimited support for simulation. In this paper we describe thernuse of domain knowledge in empowering simulationrnenvironments to support domain-specific modeling. Wernshow how software design pattern abstractions extend therndomain-neutral simulation modeling. We appliedrnComposite, Fa?ade, and Observer patterns to anrnastronomical observatory (AO) command and controlrnsystem and developed domain-specific simulation modelsrnfor the system using DEVSJAVA, a realization of OODEVS.rnThis approach is exemplified with simulationrnmodels developed based on an actual AO system.
