This article emphasizes the application of systemrnengineering principles to the development ofrnModeling and Simulation (M&S) applications. Clearrndistinction between M&S for system engineering andrnsystem engineering (SE) for M&S is presented tornclarify the need for simulation system engineering.rnFurthermore, the characteristics of emergent open,rncomplex, and adaptive M&S applications arernoverviewed to make the case for agent-directedrnsimulation system engineering. An agent-directedrnsimulation view of developing such applications isrnpresented within the framework of a cognitive systemrnengineering perspective.
