The simulation of systems based on differentialequationrnmodels normally uses a single numerical integrationrnalgorithm that applies a uniform step-size regime to all partsrnof the model. An alternative is to divide the model intornsegments based on their different dynamic behaviors and userndifferent step sizes in different segments. This approach isrnreferred to as multi-rate simulation. It can be used tornadvantage in some current real-time applications, such asrnpower electronics and automobile engine simulations. Thesernapplications can require real-time execution with frame timesrnof a few microseconds or less. These frame times requirernexpensive special-purpose hardware and software. In manyrncases the components that require this approach represent onlyrna small part of the total system and it is unnecessary to apply itrnto the rest of the system, which can be simulated with longerrnframe times.rnResearch is described that aims to combine special-purposernDSP-based high-speed simulations with a conventional realtimernLinux system to produce a distributed, multi-rate, realtimernsimulation.rnMulti-rate simulation introduces its own problems. Care has tornbe taken in the communication of data between segmentsrnoperating at different frame rates. In some cases the use ofrnmulti-rate algorithms can induce unstable behavior in thernsimulation.
