A detailed total refinery energy model is a prerequisite for ensuring that operational andrnefficiency goals can be met. It is also an invaluable tactical and strategic decision-supportrntool for predicting and quantifying the impact of refinery expansions and revamps on thernenergy systems. This is particularly so when the addition of new H_2 production units isrnplanned, or the revamping of existing ones. Such facilities change the supply andrnconsumption balances for fuel gas, steam and power. Assessing and screening thernavailable options for ensuring optimum integration, meeting both technical requirementsrnand economic hurdle rates, is not trivial.rnThis paper describes a structured framework and methods for rapid modeling of a refineryrnenergy system using Excel~? software1. Applications of this methodology include energyrnsystem impact assessments, screening of project options and continuous performancernmonitoring.
