EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON FIRE PERFORMANCE OF CONCRETE BEAMS STRENGTHENED WITH CARBON FIBER SHEETS

The results of fire tests on five reinforced concrete (RC) beams are presented in this paper, four of which were strengthened with carbon fiber sheets (CFS) and protected by passive fire insulation applied to the exterior of the CFS-strengthening system, and one of which was tested without strengthening and supplemental fire insulation. The primary objective of these tests was to investigate the failure mode, fire resistance and deformation of the strengthened beams at high temperatures, and further evaluate the effect of flexure cracks on the tension rebar temperatures during the fire tests. The experimental results show that: (a) the fire performance of the protected CFS-strengthened RC beams may be similar to, or better than, that of the unstrengthened RC beams without insulation, despite the fact that the structural effectiveness of the CFS is likely lost early in fire; and (b) the effect of flexural cracks on temperatures of tension rebars in simply-supported RC beams under fire is limited.
