Advanced Process Control (APC) refers to multivariable, predictive control that coordinates conventionalrnregulatory control. APC applications provide control directives to the regulatory control system tornachieve a higher level of safe, reliable and economic operation. Syncrude has experienced severalrnbenefits since implementing its APC program in the early 1990's. These are:rni) a return on investment by leveraging existing process automation infrastructurernii) captured expertise from panel operatorsrniii) continual optimization of plant operationrniv) improved safety and reliabilityrnSyncrude's program has flourished to the point where opportunities now exist to crossrnapplication/internal plant boundaries to achieve added benefit. One of Syncrude's first ventures intornthis opportunity was the application of a hydrogen supply and demand APC solution. The mainrnapplication links the hydrogen consumers with the hydrogen producers and coordinates hydrogenrnsupply and demand during planned and unplanned disturbances. It also coordinates with existing APCrnapplications in the hydrogen production units and the heavy gas oil units. In this way, hydrogenrnproduction capacity can be used to its full extent. This paper discusses the benefits and challenges ofrnexpanding the application of APC beyond traditional internal plant boundaries within Syncrude.
