The downstream sector is in the midst of massive capital investment, caused by a driverntoward higher output of light products and the growing importance of alternative feedstocks.rnNumerous projects are underway globally, most in the multibillion dollar range. Affecting most ofrnthese projects, however, are typical issues about managing spending and vendors-but nowrnthese issues are much more significant and pose significant challenges for project managers.rnEven minor cost overruns translate into hundreds of millions of dollars, leading many to wonderrnhow to improve project and budget management for large capital projects.rnThe paper discusses how a capital project can collect critical cost and invoice data and, withrnfinancial controls, reduce the risk of financial overruns. In addition, the paper describes howrnprojects can adhere to increasing requirements for internal and external reporting.
