Refinery emissions of pollutants such as SO_x,rnNO_x, and particulate matter (PM) are comingrnunder increased scrutiny in all parts of the world.rnTighter emissions limits have recently beenrnimposed in many western countries, and regulations,rnglobally, can soon be expected to followrnsuit. In most refineries, the FCC is the majorrnsource of these airborne pollutants. There are severalrntechnologies available to refiners to reducernemissions of these materials from the FCCrnprocess. This paper will discuss themerits of combiningrnadditives and barrier filters as a cost effectivernand highly efficient alternative to currentrnoptions. Both have been proven separately, andrnthe combination now offers a Best AvailablernControl Technology (BACT) that can meet SO_xrn(and NO_x) targets of 25-200 ppm,and particulaternmatter emissions to levels below 10 mg/Nm~3.rnSpecific examples will be given of how somernrefineries, in different parts of the world, haverndealt with these challenges, and the rationalernbehind the choices made will be explained.
