Future growth in western Canadian crude petroleum production will continue to focus on thernrecovery of bitumen reserves, some of which contain high acid content. High acid or, morerncommonly, high TAN crudes have traditionally been associated with corrosion risk, and can berndiscounted in the marketplace to offset crude blending and/or metallurgical remediation costs.rnUpgrader production facilities in western Canada, with over a century of operational history,rnhave managed these higher TAN feedstocks with lower corrosion challenges compared to otherrnhigh TAN world crudes.rnRecent research and investigations have implied a "disconnect" between the corrosivity ofrnwestern Canadian bitumen and traditional TAN – corrosion models. The CAPP – AERI TANrnstudy uses a step by step research approach, leveraged on the independent research initiatives ofrnCanmetENERGY, to relate organic acid structure and corrosion rates on mild steel, chrome steelrnand 316 austenitic stainless, in both liquid and vapor phases, using a corrosion test unit thatrnsimulates vacuum distillation conditions. This study begins with Athabasca bitumen andrnprogresses through to commercial bitumen blends and representative international high acidrncrudes. All commercial crudes and extracted naphthenic acids have been "blinded" until the testrnwork is complete to remove any regional bias. All work conducted is intended for generalrnpublication and use. This paper and presentation provides information on progress paths andrnresults of the study.
