Fluctuating market conditions lead to unstable crude oil prices. In July of 2008, thernaverage price for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil peaked at almost $150rnUSD/bbl. The light / heavy (Arab Light – Maya) oil differential was about 13 -14rnUSD/bbl thus creating a large incentive for processing heavy crude oils. Though oilrnprices have seen a steep decline in 2009 and the light / heavy differential has dropped to 4rnUSD/bbl, on percentage basis the differential has remained at around 10% of the price ofrncrude oil. Refiners in the US continue to seek lower priced feedstocks as well as low costrnoptions for upgrading their refineries for processing of these lower cost crude oils.rnUtilizing Canadian bitumen found in the country's vast oil sands reserves allows refinersrnaccess to cheap and politically secure crude feedstock of well defined qualities.rnTraditionally, oil sand bitumen has been upgraded into low sulfur bottomless syntheticrncrude oil (SCO). The distillation of the SCO is substantially different from conventionalrncrude oils limiting their content for most refiners to less than 10% of feed.rnIn recent years, the bitumen blends with these synthetic crude oils have been shipped tornUS and Canadian refineries. These blends commonly known as SynBit (SCO+Bitumen)rnand DilBit (Diluent+Bitumen) bring crude oils with full boiling range to the refineries.rnThis allows refineries to more effectively use all of their bottoms processing facilities.rnMost refineries with coker and fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) units can process higherrnvolumes of low cost bitumen based crude oils after the addition of a solvent deasphaltingrn(ROSE?) unit. This is a low-cost, high-value option for most refineries.rnFor the purposes of this paper, a base refinery designed to process 250 MPD of 34°APIrncrude is modified with KBR's Residuum Oil Supercritical Extraction (ROSE~?) solventrndeasphalting unit for processing Synbit.
