A pilot-scale demonstration study was conducted at the Hap Cremean Water Plant (HCWP) ofrnthe Columbus Division of Power and Water (DOPW) to evaluate intermediate ozonation followedrnby biologically-active filtration (BAF). The primary goal of the study was to lower the level ofrndisinfection by-product (DBP) precursors present in the source water for the HCWP; resulting inrnlower DBPs in the distribution system following chlorination.rnThe pilot-scale study was conducted over a 9-month period (April through December) andrninvolved ozonation/BAF of full-scale, softened and recarbonated water from the HCWP.rnParameters varied during the study included applied ozone dose, pH value and water temperature.rnThe pilot-plant influent was spiked with atrazine over a 3-week period to document removal ofrnthis chemical achievable by ozone/BAF treatment.rnThe results from the study indicate a significant improvement in the finished water qualityrnfollowing ozone/BAF treatment under all applied conditions. The BAF filters provided arnsubstantial additional removal of total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC),rnultraviolet absorbance at 254nm (UV254) and specific UV absorbance (SUVA) values, completernremoval of atrazine, and exhibited lower simulated distribution system (SDS) concentrations ofrnTTHMs and HAA5. Higher levels of TOC removal took place at higher ozone doses, at higherrnpH values and at higher water temperatures (i.e., under conditions that favor a higher ozonernuptake rate).
