This paper presents the use of a two-stage filtration process for groundwater systemsrnwith high levels of iron and manganese. The process combines biological iron removal andrnmanganese dioxide removal processes to allow immediate start-up of systems, improve removalrnefficiency and reduce operating costs. Results from three systems are presented, that combinernboth full scale and pilot testing results. The results show that raw water iron levels were reducedrnfrom 6 mg/L, 6.5 mg/L and 12 mg/L in three systems to less than one mg/L in the first biologicalrnstage. The second stage using chlorine or permanganate as an oxidant, reduced iron andrnmanganese levels to well below the secondary MCLs of 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L forrnmangananese.
