Shrubby plantation. for land degradation control, with overhigh planting density could exacerbate soil water deficit. and limit the development of autochthonic plants which play an important role on preventing wind erosion. In order to explore the potential competition status between Caragana spp. with autochthonic plants, we studied with alley plantations of Caragana spp. with 3 planting densities (PDs), 4000 hm-2. 2857 hm.2 and 2222 hm-2. on degradative grassland in Ningxia, by analyzing shrubby root distribution. The result showed Caragana spp. fine roots were denser in plantation with 4000 hrr1.2 of PD. and average fine root surfacearea density (FRSD), cumulate percents of fine root surfacearea in topsoil (from ground to 40 cm depth) and FRSD in the central soil of alley woodland, were decreased as planting density decreasing. In Caragana spp. plantation with 2222 hm-2 of PD. there were fewer fine root in the topsoil and central soil. than with higher PDs. which indicate interspecies competition between Caragana spp. with autochthonic plants, and intraspecies competition among Caragana spp., are more mitigative in that status. Consequently, 2222 hm-2 can be comparatively suited for Caragana spp. plantation management in study area, because of that plantation also can control wind erosion effectively.
