Ceramic water filters are used in many developing countries as a household water treatment technology,rnoften produced locally by use of regionally available materials and constructed in various forms (i.e., asrndiscs, candles, or pots) that all rely on similar mechanisms of filtration and disinfection. A commonrnproduction technique involves the application of an antimicrobial, colloidal silver coating to the porousrnceramic filter. The silver coating has shown improvements in microbial log reduction values overrnuncoated ceramic filters both in the laboratory and in the field. However, as water passes through thernceramic filter, the silver coating will release from the ceramic surface, decreasing the disinfectionrneffectiveness of the filter by reducing the amount of silver.rnIn this investigation, a colloidal silver solution was prepared according to procedures recommended forrnproduction of ceramic pot filters. Silver nanoparticles were adsorbed onto representative ceramic surfacesrnand assessed with a quartz crystal microbalance, which monitored silver release from the surface.rnExperiments were conducted to determine the effects of several water quality parameters, including pH,rnturbidity, ionic strength, and natural organic matter, on the release of silver nanoparticles fromrnrepresentative ceramic surfaces. The most significant release was caused by waters containing sodiumrnhypochlorite, the main component of household bleach, suggesting that cleaning of silver-containingrnceramic filters should be performed with caution.
