Oxidation of model NOM and natural source NOM and its effect on membrane filtration performance

The present study investigated the effects of ozonation and UV/H2O2 advanced oxidation process (AOP) on natural organic matter (NOM) and the effect of oxidation on membrane fouling during subsequent filtration. The study considered two source waters; one containing model NOM (i.e. from the Suwannee River) and one containing natural NOM (i.e. Jericho Pond, Vancouver Canada). Filtration was performed using flat sheet ceramic membranes with molecular weight cut offs of l;8;50andl50kDa.rnFor all conditions investigated, oxidation had substantial effects on the characteristics of both the model and natural NOM. In particular, oxidation significantly reduced the apparent molecular weight components of the NOM sources. Oxidation also substantially reduced the extent of membrane fouling. However, the extent in the reduction in fouling varied depending on the type of oxidation used and the molecular weight cut off of the membrane. The changes in the molecular weight distribution due to oxidation seemed to be a main factor responsible for the reduction in fouling.
