This study evaluated membrane fouling in submerged MBRs at various sludge retention times (SRTs). Three lab-scale submerged MBRs with SRTs of 20, 40 and 60 days were tested at a constant permeate flux of 9 L/m~2/h with 0.4-(am hollow fiber microfiltration membranes. Strong correlations between resistance and protein/carbohydrate ratios in extracellular -polymeric substances (EPS) (r =0.86), as well as, hydrophobicity (r = 0.86) of suspended solid indicated the importance of physicochemical properties of microorganism in membrane fouling. The protein to carbohydrate ratio in EPS was a significant factor in controlling membrane fouling.
