A long term side-by-side pilot-scale comparison of different pretreatments prior to surface water nanofiltration was conducted. Conventional clarification was compared to two membrane pretreatments (clarification followed by ultrafiltration and microfiltration alone) and their impact on 3 semi-industrial NF pilot plants (4 to 9 m~3/h) was studied over 3 years. Results showed that pilot plants located after membrane pretreatments (UF or MF) are more prone to fouling compared to pilot plant fed with conventionally pretreated water, even if feed water produced by UF proved to be of higher quality in terms of particles content. This fouling led to an increase of longitudinal pressure drop and water flux was significantly reduced after one year and two years of operation for MF pretreatment and UF pretreatment, respectively. Autopsies were conducted on membrane elements from each line and showed that biological fouling is present on the 3 NF pilot plants but at different extent. In ultrafiltration or microfiltration units, no biological effect occurs whereas reference lane pretreatment comprises dual-media filtration: most available nutrients are probably consumed in this treatment step. This consumption seems sufficient to inhibit biofilm growth in nanofiltration pilot plants.
