The San Jose Water Company (SJWC) owns and operates the Montevina Water Treatment Plant (Montevina WTP) in Los Gatos, California. The 30 MGD capacity Montevina WTP treats surface water from the local watershed by coagulation, hydraulic flocculation, granular media filtration, and chlorine disinfection. Pilot testing of membrane filtration technology was conducted as part of the Facility Plan for improvements to the Montevina WTP. The pilot testing of membrane technologies was conducted at the Ostwald intake site from February through May of 2010. The pilot testing was performed during the wet season (with the more challenging source water conditions) and operated through over a dozen high turbidity storm events.rnThree different types of membrane filtration (MF) pilot systems were tested to confirm that the technology would work as expected with the "flashy" source water conditions and to develop project specific design and operating criteria. The pilot testing of different manufacturer's systems also permits a more competitive selection process for the membrane equipment. The Kruger system utilized pressure ceramic MF technology, the Pall Corporation system utilized pressure polymeric (PVDF) MF technology and the Siemens-Memcor system utilized submerged PVDF MF technology.rnThe pilot testing successfully demonstrated the ability of the membrane alternative treatment process to meet the water treatment requirements and objectives for the project including turbidity and TOC removal. Furthermore, all three MF systems operated successfully through the "flashy" storm event water conditions, maintaining stable filtration rates and operating with an appropriate membrane cleaning strategy. This paper presents the water quality results and the membrane design criteria for the membrane equipment based on the pilot performance and operating data for the three MF systems.
