RO is seeing widespread use as a core technology for advanced treatment of secondary effluent for thernpurpose of indirect potable reuse (IPR) and other high level process water applications. As part of anrnIPR scheme, RO is often relied on to achieve pathogen removal, including virus removal. Currently,rnthere are limited methods for validating RO virus removal. This study utilized a fluorescent dyern(Rhodamine WT or R-WT) as a molecular marker for validating a high level of virus removal by a fullscalernRO system installed at the Gippsland Water Factory in the State of Victoria, Australia. Validationrntesting was mandated by the Victorian Department of Health (VDH) to demonstrate compliance with thernvirus log removal objectives for RO as part of the plant’s Quantitative Microbial Risk AssessmentrnQMRA). Results of the testing showed, that when dosed at a feed concentration of 100 ug/L, an intact 2-rnstage RO system can achieve ~2.6 log dye removal, with removal most likely limited by feed dyernconcentration. Further, limited on-line TOC monitoring of RO feed and permeate demonstrated >2.0 logrnremoval at steady-state operating conditions. These results have resulted in VDH awarding the ROrnsystem 2.0 log virus removal credit as part of the QMRA.
