This study is part of a Tailored Collaboration funded by WateReuse Foundation commissioned in 2008 (WRF 08-08) to study the impact of oxidation processes on organic fouling of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane treatment systems for water reuse. This Project Team has investigated the use of four oxidation strategies prior to RO membrane treatment for organic fouling minimization: UV, UV/peroxide, ozone, and ozone/peroxide. As expected, UV alone (even at a high fluence of 4000 mJ/cm~2) has minimal impact on the quality of the organic matter in the feed water and little to no impact on fouling control in flat sheet tests. Both ozone and ozone/peroxide have been shown to impact organic matter, minimize flux decline, and significantly improve membrane performance in both flat sheet and pilot-scale studies using effluent from a membrane bioreactor and a MF/UF system at two different wastewater treatment plants. Ozone doses as low as 1.5 mg/L have been demonstrated to improve performance relative to control (non-oxidized) waters. At the time of writing this abstract, UV/peroxide testing was underway and pilot scale data are expected in early 2011. Thus, this presentation will compare the four pre-oxidation strategies at bench-scale (flat sheet testing) and pilot-scale with respect to changes in specific flux and changes in organic matter as observed through techniques such as 3-D fluorescence, PRAM, and SEC-UV/Fluorescence. Additional data will be presented from membrane autopsies and surface characterizations of the fouled membranes.
