The emergence of digital technologiesrnhas transformed every aspect of thernprofessional audiovisual supply chain fromrncontent creation and post-production torndistribution and consumption and createdrnnew opportunities for all stakeholders. Withrnthese opportunities also come challenges,rnsuch as more complex value chainrninteractions and an explosion in the numberrnof assets relevant to commerce.rnIn an effort to make the most of the newrnopportunities and address the challenges,rnmajor content producers have redesignedrnworkflows to make them content-centric,rnputting in place digital media managementrninfrastructure to help streamline operations.rnWhile these efforts help reducerninefficiencies, the role of unique identifiersrnin the movie and television supply chain canrnalso facilitate and improve the efficiency ofrnautomated workflows.rnIn late 2010, the Entertainment IdentifierrnRegistry (EIDR) was launched by a group ofrncompanies — including Comcast, Disney,rnWarner Bros, Rovi, MovieLabs, andrnCableLabs — as a non-profit tradernorganization acting as a centralized registryrnfor uniquely identifying video works. EIDRrnis built on the flexible data modelrnestablished by the Digital Object Identifierrnstandard.rnHowever, with digitization has also comerna fragmentation of the entertainment supplyrnchain. As the industry adopts cloud-basedrnsystems, a web services model built on openrnAPIs will soon follow. Small app-developersrnwill vie with large hardware manufacturersrnto deliver the most engaging consumerrnentertainment experience using the samernplatforms and content items. We need torntranslate our centralized ID space into arntechnology service layer which can bernaccessed by a distributed ecosystem.rnThis paper provides an overview of thernimplementation of and interfaces to EIDR,rnincluding registering and looking uprnrecords, metadata schema, andrndeduplication process. We then extend thisrnregistry into the distributed ecosystem byrndescribing technical methods developers canrnuse to keep in sync with the ID space as itrngrows and morphs. Web service-basedrnmechanisms for matching and translatingrncontent IDs across catalogs are described.rnWe introduce the concept of ID stability andrna time to live (TTL) model that uses readilyrnunderstood concepts of internet architecturernto implement EIDR and EIDR-like ID spacesrninto common software frameworks. Wernconclude with an investigation of potentialrnimplications and implementations forrncontent management, advertising,rninteractive applications, and EPG metadata.
