Aiming at the effects of visual coding on information identification under ambient illumination in aircraft cockpit, a simulation model of flight information display interface was developed for ergonomics experiment. 32 subjects participated in the character-search tasks in the experiment. Correct rate and reaction time were used as evaluation indexes to analyze visual performance. ANOVA and bilinear regression were used to determine the critical sizes of different character types under various ambient illumination levels. The results of this experiment are: the order of visual performance of character types: symbols > numbers > Chinese/English; the ambient illumination has certain effects on identification performance; supplement and correction of the classic equation are put forwards to fit the need of current visual display terminal.
