Enterococcus faecalis are resilient anaerobic bacteria commonly isolated from persistent endodontic infections.1 They resist conventional intracanal medications by forming biofilms.2 Recent research has demonstrated the bactericidal effect of a non-thermal plasma against E. faecalis.3 In this in vitro study we investigated the efficacy of a nanosecond pulsed, atmospheric-pressure He-O2 plasma for treatment of E. faecalis grown on hydroxyapatite (HA) discs. The effect of oxygen concentration in the He-O2 mixture for generating non-thermal plasmas disinfecting E. faecalis was discussed. Microbiological analysis using culture and colony forming unit counting as well as confocal laser scanning microscopic imaging were used for the study.
