This paper presents the design of a three layer wideband circularly polarized resonant cavity antenna. Dual circularly polarized (CP) aperture coupled microstrip antenna is used as the primary source embedded inside the cavity formed by metallic ground plane and frequency selective surface (FSS) based superstrate. The superstrate is placed at a distance of half a wavelength from ground. The dual (LHCP/RHCP) circularly polarized radiation is achieved by feeding the aperture coupled microstrip patch with branch-line coupler. Approximately 22% (2.2 Ghz-2.77Ghz) impedance bandwidth and axial ratio bandwidth (less than 3.7dB) is obtained. The maximum directivity of the antenna is 8dBi. The directivity can be further enhanced by increasing the lateral size of the antenna.
