This paper presents a comprehensive study on the effect of a mixed-propagation path on buried cables crossing a river referred to as “river-crossing cable”. To this aim, a full wave approach based upon the finite-element method (FEM) is utilized. The simulations are conducted for two different strike locations. The induced currents on the shield of the buried river-crossing cable are calculated at the midpoint of the cable and at its terminations. It is shown that the peak value and the waveshape of the induced currents are markedly affected by the presence of the river. It is also shown that the induced currents decrease as the width of the river increases.
