This paper proposes an advanced technique for Head-on-Media (HOM) detection with PZT self-sensing actuators. Unlike conventional diagnosis approach using X-ray scanning, the proposed method detects HOM events before the drive spins up. Spin-up retries are avoided so that the drives are preserved for failure analysis or data recovery. Firstly, the analytical model of PZT self-sensing actuators is derived to relate the sensing signal to head motion caused by PZT deformation. Next, the technique of Enhanced Indirect-Driven Self-Sensing Actuation (EIDSSA) is applied to retrieve the self-sensing signal with a small probing current (3 mA) injected into VCM driver. Experimental results show that the proposed technique is effective and consistent to detect HOM events without manual involvement.
