Unconventional drilling techniques have unlocked vast reserves of gas, but getting the gas to market remains a challenge due to limited pipeline capacity. An alternative monetization option is to convert the gas into a valuable liquid, such as gasoline or methanol, bypassing the need for pipeline transport. Historically, gas-to-liquids (GTL) systems have only been implemented at large scales, such as the 1.6 BCF/D Pearl plant in Qatar. However, recent advances in process design and cost reduction have resulted in small-scale GTL systems profitable at gas flows of 4-20 MMcf/d. Small-scale GTL units are now an attractive option for gas processors to expand intake capacity without increasing pipeline takeaway. A GTL unit based on Primus’ STG+ process accepts a wide range of feed gas, including gas at the wellhead or gathering system, pure ethane, gas with up to 25% CO_2, or any mixture of methane and NGLs with no limits on C2+. The system uses a single-loop thermochemical process to convert gas into zero-sulfur gasoline or methanol, which can be sold in regional markets. This paper details economics, process design, utilities, and product specifications of a small-scale GTL unit installed at a gas processing plant and also at a standalone Marcellus facility.
