With the rapid expansion of required compression capacity and subsequent downturn in oil andrngas prices, a need to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs within the midstream businessrnbecame evident. The gathering type compressors used within the midstream system are typicallyrnequipped with minimal automation and were rarely adjusted for varying field pressure conditions.rnExtensive modeling of these compressors showed that throughput could be increased significantlyrnwith more routine adjustments. Therefore, a program was developed to provide guidance tornOperations on the adjustments that need to be made to increase the utilization of the existingrncompression fleet. The Compressor Optimization Program development involved the followingrnsteps:rn1. Create an in-depth equipment database and build detailed models of all compressors,rnincluding the building of load step schedules.rn2. Create tables of the load step schedules that are intuitive and easy to interpret forrndistribution to operations.rn3. Develop a tool that would automatically look-up the optimum settings for maximumrnthroughput at current conditions within safe operating boundaries.rn4. Construct human-machine interface (HMI) screens to display the current conditions,rncurrent compressor utilization, recommended settings, and predicted gain fromrnadjustments.rn5. Work with Operations to implement the recommendations.rn6. Document the improvements and search for other opportunities to further increaserncompany-wide compression utilization and efficiency.rnThe Compressor Optimization Program was first developed for and implemented in Anadarko’srnGreater Wattenberg Area. An overall increase of 10-15% in station throughput was attributed tornthis effort. This increased capacity allowed for an increase in base production despite a decreasernin new well drilling/completion. Deployment of this program is now being applied in all Anadarkornfields.
