In future years, billions of devices will be connected everywhere across the world. Device-to-Device (D2D) communication plays an important role in fifth generation (5G), which allows two proximate devices communicate each other without the need of evolved node base station (eNB). This gives rise to low power consumption, increased data rate, reduced delay and higher throughput. The handover is one of the challenges for D2D communication. The unnecessary handover will reduce the system quality significantly. In this paper, we have proposed a handover requirement analysis (HRA) method, which decides the necessity of a handover based on the device travelling time and time threshold. The simulation results prove that the proposed scheme minimizes the probability of handover failure and unnecessary handover than the conventional radio signal strength (RSS) based methods.
