This paper presents a distributed wireless system developed to record, store and transmit bioelectrical activity from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The system is composed of three front-end modules; each has the capability of acquiring signals from up to 32 channels from the GI tract. The front-ends could either store the recorded signals into a flash memory, or wirelessly transmit them to the back-end connected to a computer featuring a custom-made graphical user interface (GUI). The GUI displays signals in real-time, and stores them for off-line analysis. The system was successfully tested on rigorous benchtop experiments. The results of these tests showed that the frontends could simultaneously acquire signals akin to the bioelectrical signals of the GI tract, amplify and filter the signals, and transmit them wirelessly to the back-end. Furthermore, it was showed that each front-end could store data for approximately 34 hours should the wireless communication be lost. We are planning to implant the front-ends in the future.
