An Analytical Time-Domain Channel Characterization of UWB Propagation in Railway Environment

The Ultra Wideband (UWB) communication presents a potential candidate to develop wireless communication systems with high speed. The UWB application in the high data rate railway connectivity is attracting attention from the industry practitioners and the researchers while considering the different factors like propagation environment and the different propagation mechanisms. Here, an analytical time-domain (TD) solution is investigated for UWB communication in a railway scenario. The considered propagation paths undergo direct propagation, ground reflection, reflection from the train roof, and train-edge diffraction. To prove the validity, the TD solution is compared with the inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) of the frequency-domain (FD) solution. The pulse shape distortion is also analyzed by simulating the channel impulse response. Finally, it is shown that to obtain the results, the TD solution takes less computational time than that taken by IFFT-FD solution.
