Investigation of the Breakdown Behavior of Silicone Gel Insulation in MV Application

Silicone gels are elastic materials characterized by easy processing and high dielectric strength. Because of their good aging characteristics and thermal stability they can be used in both MV and HV applications. In this paper the results of silicone gel investigation performed with an experimental test setup consisting of an epoxy cast MV coil fixed on an iron core, embedded in silicone gel are discussed. The electric field distribution between the cast coil and the core is simulated numerically. The setup is subjected to thermal cycling, after which the breakdown field of the setup is measured. The result obtained with the experimental test setup is compared with the dielectric strength of the silicone gel measured with an IEC-60243 compliant parallel plate setup. The effect of gas bubble formation after electrical discharge in the silicone gel is briefly discussed.
