It has been almost 150 years since Schoebein coined the word "passivity" for the peculiar condition that is now almost universally believed to be caused by a film whose nature is still the subject of extensive research throughout the world to this day. Indeed, it is the acceptance of the idea of a film being responsible for the condition of passivity that is one of the major accomplishments of past research. This was perceptively pointed out by Uhlig (1) in his review of the history of passivity: "Significantly, ... the indicated direction (in which a plausible unified explanation of passivity points) embraces portions of all the points of view previously expressed by many investigators over the past 140 years... One accomplishment of the previous and ongoing debates has led to the present acceptance, by and large, that some kind of surface film plays a part in most if not all instances of passive behavior".
