Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) have been introduced to the marketplace. The manufacturers havernfocused on selling the cars based on fuel economy/emissions and modest performance, but there are otherrnfeatures that the high-voltage battery system can do to increase the utility of the vehicle system to addrnvalue. This paper will explore some of the added features that these vehicles can offer that conventionalrnvehicles cannot. The convenience and utility of these features will be valuable to the consumer but thernexact value would have to be evaluated by the vehicle manufacturer and their customers after the productrnis out on the street for some time. This paper will discuss many of the possible additional features of arnPlug-In Hybrid Electric (PIHEV) and the willingness of the public to pay for these. Many of thesernfeatures are not known to the public and the manufacturers have not been assessed for their potentialrnvalue. This paper will point out some of the obvious features of the PIHEV but there are more that havernnot yet been imagined. When these vehicles are introduced to the market people will discover and inventrnnew uses for the capability of these vehicles.rnThe PIHEV has advantages for the Manufacturers as well. For example, the physical parts count of thernvehicle can be reduced by over an order of magnitude thus reducing assembly and maintenance costs.rnThe actual number of moving parts in constructed prototypes has been greatly reduced and yet higherrnefficiencies are being achieved. This is occurring because of the use of computer control for everyrnsubsystem in the car. This was not possible a few years ago since the cost of micro-computers were toornhigh. Today, microcomputers are available at less than $3.00 each. Their value added to the function ofrneach component is enormous compared to the cost. Thus it is possible for the Manufacturers of cars tornreduce vehicle cost because of its' mechanical simplicity but improve on the performance and featuresrnthat the customers expect.
