In September 2000, a Project (with the acronym Rholab) started under the UK Foresight VehiclernProgramme with the objective of developing an optimized lead-acid battery solution for Hybrid ElectricrnVehicles. The Project partners include the European Advanced Lead-Acid Battery Consortium, HawkerrnBatteries, Provector and the Universities of Sheffield and Warwick. The work is based on a novel,rnindividual, spirally wound valve-regulated lead-acid 2V cell optimized for HEV use and low variability.rnThis cell is being used as a building block for the development of a complete battery pack that is managedrnat the cell level. Following bench testing, this battery pack is to be thoroughly evaluated by substituting itrnfor the NiMH pack in a Honda Insight.rnThe Rholab cell is based on the 8Ah Hawker Cyclon cell which has been modified to have current takeoffrnat both ends. In addition a variant has been produced with modified cell chemistry to help deal withrnproblems that can occur when these VRLA cells operate in a partial state of charge condition. The cellsrnhave been cycled to a specially formulated test cycle based on real vehicle data derived from testing thernHonda Insight on the various test tracks at the Millbrook Proving Grounds in the UK. These cycling testsrnhave shown that the lead-acid pack can be successfully cycled when subjected to the high currentrndemands from the vehicle, which have been measured at 15C on discharge and 8C during regenerativernrecharging, and cycle life is looking very promising under this arduous test regime.rnConcurrent with this work, battery development has been taking place. It was decided early on to developrnthe 144V battery as four 36V modules. Data collection and control has been built in and special stepsrntaken to minimise the problems of interconnect in this complex system. Development of the batteryrnmodules is now at an advanced stage and it is hoped to fit the lead-acid battery into the Honda Insightrnduring September 2003. The project plan then allows for extensive testing of the vehicle with its leadacidrnbattery at Millbrook so it can be compared with the benchmark tests which have already been carriedrnout on the vehicle with its NiMH batteries.
