Today's Hybrid Electric Vehicles HEV, do not charge their batteries from the grid but uses brakingrnenergy and the gasoline engine to maintain the charge in their batteries. This paper discusses the conceptrnof a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles, PIHEV and it's battery pack where the pack can be charged fromrnthe same source as the HEV but adds the use of the Electric Grid for household and Industry electricrnenergy. The Electric Vehicle EV, now on the market, requires a different battery as well, since thisrnbattery must store a high amount of energy as well as be able to supply enough power to overcome anyrnadded weight. Battery needs for a PIHEV is different than current EV or HEV. The batteries in PIHEV'srnneed to store enough energy for a "substantial" electric range and also be able to supply enough power forrnperformance as good or better than the conventional vehicle both all electrically and under simultaneousrngasoline engine and electric operation. These batteries also need to be lifetime with no maintenance to bernacceptable to the automotive market place todayrnThis paper will describe first the best vehicle configurations for PIHEV's and then the batteries for thernconfigurations, and finally the performance and weight consequences. Examples of constructed vehiclesrnwill be presented with measured performance results. The battery location, the configuration, thernenvironmental requirements, the power and energy required and the technology needed to meet thesernvehicle requirements will be presented.rnThe object of this paper is to identify the requirements for these batteries and the battery system andrncreate a set of specifications for battery manufacturers that will make the Plug-In HEV more thanrncompetitive to the conventional car in price, performance and utility. The resulting vehicle will then haverna higher economic value to the customer.
