In his State of the Union address on January 28, 2003, President Bush proposed "$1.2 billion in researchrnfunding so that America can lead the world in developing clean, hydrogen-powered automobiles… With arnnew national commitment, our scientists and engineers will overcome obstacles to taking these cars fromrnlaboratory to showroom …" This FreedomCAR and Fuel initiative, adds $720 Million in new funding forrnresearch, development, and demonstration (RD&D) of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies over the nextrn5 years. The U.S. Department of Energy will implement these initiatives through the Hydrogen, FuelrnCells, and Infrastructure Technologies Program, and in partnership with the automobile and energyrncompanies, technology developers, national laboratories, and universities.rnThis presentation will describe the technical progress that led to this accelerated activity; the RD&Drnpriorities and plans for the program, and the impact that the accelerated schedule will have on therncommercialization of fuel cell vehicles and establishment of a hydrogen infrastructure in the U.S. RD&Drnhighlights will include recent progress in (1) low-platinum membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) andrnhigh-volume manufacturing processes for MEAs, (2) hydrogen production and refueling technologies,rnand (3) hydrogen storage systems. RD&D plans will cover program priorities including (1) a nationalrneffort on new hydrogen storage materials, (2) enhanced activities in hydrogen production and deliveryrntechnologies, (3) cost-reduction activities for transportation, stationary and portable fuel cell systems,rn(4) increased focus on codes and standards, and (5) infrastructure and technology validation activities forrnreal-world testing of fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen fueling stations. The FreedomCAR and Fuelrninitiative aims to put fuel cell vehicles in the showroom by 2020.
