Truckstop Electrification (TSE) is a term used to describe the substitution of grid-connected electricrnpower in lieu of idling IC engines for stationary auxiliary power in large commercial trucks. TSErncommonly refers to supplying AC grid power for truckers at overnight truck stops, providing clean, quietrnheating, air conditioning, and 120 volt accessibility. TSE is also being extended to include an electricrn"shore power" option for refrigerated trailers with diesel driven refrigeration compressor systems.rnThis report will concentrate on refrigerated trailers, which are used to transport, deliver and store freshrnand frozen foods from producers, ports and distribution centers throughout California and the nation.rnLarge distribution centers can have particularly high concentrations of pollutants and diesel exhaustrnparticulates from idling diesel tractors and auxiliary diesel engines on trailer refrigeration units (TRUs).rnThey are frequently located in the most highly impacted communities, creating environmental justicernconcerns with both public health and political implications.rnRefrigerated trailers are required to maintain their temperature set-points for up to 8 hours during a typicalrnworkday while food is transferred and incoming and outgoing loads are staged and scheduled. Nearly allrnrefrigerated trailers utilize an auxiliary diesel engine to directly drive their refrigeration compressors (seernfigure 1). Additionally, some trailers you see on the road are actually port containers on a wheeledrnchassis. Port containers have on-board electric compressor drivers that utilize belly mounted dieselrngenerators for over-the-road power.rnThe objective of this project is to explore the costs and feasibility of adding auxiliary electric motors,rnpowered by a dockside electrical supply infrastructure, to drive these TRUs while stationary at warehousernlocations. Data will be gathered in order to assess the TRU run costs, infrastructure costs, maintenancerncosts, air quality improvements, fuel use and plant electric power costs.
